Hitchcock's first sound film stands up well when viewed today and was responsible for pushing Great Britain into the world film market. Many bits of film business that were to become Hitchcock trademarks are evident in this film, including the first of his cameo appearances. Story of a woman who faces the legal system as well as a blackmailer for murdering an attacker in self-defense was originally shot as a silent film but partially reshot and converted into England's first sound release.
